The castle and the church
" The modern castle, built in a quasi monastic style, supports the apse of the church. The old door of XIIth century, flanked of two towers, spaced of a warhead above which the slides, intended for the harrow, take shape, is still used as the castle entry.
The foot of the fortifications plunges in the torrent. No castle does have a situation such mysterious and romantic ".

The WEAPONS " speaking " about, the Du BREUIL, the Du BOST, the Du BROUTET, lords of Gargilesse from XVIIth to XIXth century are of azure to the gold rafter accompanied by three nipples in their cup.
The site naturally defended by the deep gorge of Creuse and Gargilesse lent itself to the fortification. It is the castle which was at the origin of Gargilesse as of Xe century. Lords of Gargilesse, Naillac built the castle and the vault (end XIIth) and kept them in their posession several centuries. In 1650, at the time of the Fronde, the castle was plundered and burned. Rebuilt in XVIIIth in a quasi monastic style, it supports the apse of the church.

George Sand had a small house with Gargilesse and loved this site particularly. "
Visits from May to August
The strengthened door described by George Sand is still the only testimony of the old castle destroyed in 1650 at the time of the Fronde. The current building dates from XVIIIth century.
